Recently we came across this interesting and concerning article about the hidden horrors of period underwear (and some other menstrual products) containing harmful chemicals for the body. These harmful chemicals are called PFAS or Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances. We're sharing it with you, so we can help you understand what it's all about, and also to give you peace-of-mind that that's NOT what you get with KNICKED!
In January 2020, journalist Jessian Choy, reported that a nuclear scientist had found these group of harmful chemicals (PFAS) in several pairs of a particular brand of period underwear. PFAS are a group of man-made synthetic chemicals that are manufactured and used in different industries all over the world. These chemicals include PFOA, PFOS, GenX, and many others. These chemicals are very persistent and accumulate over time. Some research even showed that exposure to PFAS can lead to detrimental human health problems - yikes!
One recent example of the dangers of toxic chemicals can be seen in the Thinx period panties lawsuit, which settled for $5 million over claims of harmful chemicals in their products. The company which markets itself as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional menstrual products, has faced criticism from consumers and environmental groups for its use of PFAS.
In addition to that, several studies have shown that PFOA and PFOS can cause reproductive and developmental problems, liver and kidney problems, and immunological effects in animals. For humans, these chemicals can cause increased cholesterol levels, immune system disorder, cancer, and thyroid disruption. WHAT A PALAVA!!!
The majority of single-use disposables (pads/tampons) also contain the same toxins/plastics and with tampons these are inserted into your BODY!! Plus the added damage to our environment.
